Step 9 - Searching for Opportunities
About this step
There are many ways of finding jobs. You may feel more comfortable with some of them than others. It’s up to you to decide which routes to choose. The important thing is that you find sufficient job opportunities to give yourself a reasonable chance of converting one of them into a job offer. You will be very lucky indeed if you only find one opportunity, submit a CV, go for interview and achieve a job offer.
Why completing this step will help
- You need to find opportunities that match your need.
- Not all jobs are advertised
- There are many routes to opportunities – you need to use the ones that you are comfortable with.
- The job market evolves through time. What worked last time may not work now.
- Allows you to decide what is most appropriate for you.

Step10 - Making the Application
About this step
On first sight, this step looks fairly straightforward. All that you need to do is send the application form, or the CV, to the right destination, and tell them which job you are applying for. However, a good number of employers ask for the application to be submitted with a covering letter. Now the task gets trickier. What do you say (or more probably what do you leave out) to enhance your chances?
Why completing this step will help
- Get your application to the right location by the best method.
- Make sure your covering letter doesn’t undermine your CV.

Step 11 - Keeping Records
About this step
At the start of your campaign it is easy to remember to whom you have submitted an application, and what you said in it. Later on, when you have perhaps responded to twenty or thirty opportunities, or even written speculatively to several hundred organisations, trusting to memory is a dangerous course of action. It‘s too easy to get caught out. Records are essential if you are going to appear professional to prospective employers. But, what do you keep?
Why completing this step will help
- With lots of applications all at different stages you need to know what you are doing.
- You can be sure where you are up to with each application
- You are less likely to say the wrong thing when an employer makes contact.
- You have the basis for monitoring overall progress towards that job.
