Step 1 - Understanding what you need from a Job

About this step

You need to identify the things that matter to you. Some of these may be tangible, like money and locality, others may be more intangible, like whether it gives you fulfillment. Whatever the things that matter to you, if your new job doesn't provide them, it's not going to be a success. So, before you start your search, you need to identify what your new job will need to deliver for you.

Why completing this step will help

  1. Avoid getting into the wrong job
  2. Check that the job is a good fit
  3. Check that it will meet your needs
  4. Recognise at the outset what constraints you have

Step 3 - Identifying Job Families that will use my skills

About this step

Once you are clear about the skills that you want to use in the future, you can begin to identify the families of jobs that will require those skills. If, for example, your skills are numerate, a job in the banking industry might suit. If your skills are literate, on the other hand, the publishing industry may provide an outlet. You need to identify the sectors or job families that can utilise your skills, whatever you have.

Why completing this step will help

  1. Expand your horizons
  2. Identify jobs that might suit you
  3. Identify jobs that are a match for your skills
  4. Create more options for yourself in the job market

Step 4 - Evaluating Job Possibilities

About this step

By identifying job families that will use your skills you may end up with a long list of possibilities. You need to narrow your options down. Find out about these job possibilities, and decide which are the ones that suit you the most. You need to get the list down to two or three job types for which you have the necessary skills, and which you feel that you would be happy to do.

Why completing this step will help

  1. Check whether a job option is a practical proposition for you
  2. Check that the job is aligned with your values
  3. Check that the job can satisfy your constraints
  4. Confirms your career direction
